A 3-hour online course for anyone who uses AI tools at work and wants consistently useful output

The model knows nothing you have not told it, so the quality of the answer depends on the quality of the instruction. Most people at work are getting generic, plausible, occasionally wrong output from AI tools because nobody has shown them how to ask. Practical Prompt Engineering fixes that in one afternoon. You leave with a tested, reusable prompt for a real task from your own job, and a method you can apply in any tool your organisation provides.

Format 3 hours, live over Microsoft Teams, with two 10-minute breaks
Cohort 6 to 12 delegates, single facilitator
Price £250 per delegate, ex VAT
Funding A CPD submission is in preparation. Once accredited, eligible Welsh employers will be able to claim up to 75% back through the Welsh Government Flexible Skills Programme, bringing the cost to £62.50 per delegate for training completed by 31 March 2027
Facilitator Oliver Smith FBCS

Who it is for

Anyone who uses, or is about to use, AI tools at work. No technical background assumed. The skill is tool-agnostic, so you practise in whichever tool your organisation already uses, whether that is Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or something else.

The question it answers

How do I get consistently useful work out of the tools I already have.

Set the model’s REMIT

The course is built on one mnemonic, and everything hangs off it.

R, Role. Who the model should be for this task.
E, Essential background. What it needs to know that it cannot know.
M, Mission. What you actually want, in one clear line.
I, In-bounds and out-of-bounds. What to include, what to leave alone.
T, Target format. What the output should look like.

How the 3 hours run

45 minutes, Why prompts fail. One failed prompt rebuilt live using REMIT, scored by the room after every change, so you see exactly what each element does.

50 minutes, The 4 techniques. Context loading, output specification, worked examples and iterative critique. Then groups repair 3 broken prompts.

35 minutes, Your real work. Each delegate builds a reusable prompt for a recurring task from their own job, and a partner tests it cold.

30 minutes, Welcome and close. Framing at the start, a knowledge check and feedback at the end.

What you leave with

A tested, reusable prompt, built for a real recurring task from your own role, challenged by a partner, and usable the same afternoon.

A one-page reference sheet covering REMIT, the 4 techniques, and the checks to run before relying on any AI answer.

Pointers to the published prompting guidance from the major AI providers, so what you learn stays current as the tools change.

Throughout, the rule is to bring the task and leave the data behind. Nothing confidential goes into any tool during the course.

Welsh Government funding

Through the Flexible Skills Programme, eligible Welsh employers can claim up to 75% of the cost of accredited AI training for training completed by 31 March 2027. A CPD submission for this course is in preparation, and once it is confirmed the same funding route will apply, which would bring the cost to £62.50 per delegate. The employer pays the full fee first and claims the funding afterwards, and the decision on eligibility and award rests with the Welsh Government. We will keep this page updated.

Private delivery

We run Practical Prompt Engineering privately for one organisation, with the exercises built around your team’s actual tasks and the tool you use. In-company delivery is quoted separately. Tell us your numbers and your tool and we will come back with a price.

Book your place

Open cohorts are booked per seat. Tell us which cohort and how many people on our contact page, and we will confirm your places and send the joining details. You will need a Teams link, a browser, and access to whichever AI tool your organisation provides.

If your leadership team also needs to govern AI and lead the change, pair this with Leading Through AI. Both courses are described together in our launch post. For a preview of the thinking behind the course, read Prompt engineering for leaders, the 5 habits that matter.
