If your software is built by an outsourced or offshore team and you are not technical, you are trusting people you cannot easily check. An independent review tells you whether you are getting what you pay for, where the risk sits, and what to change, without you having to become an engineer.
Here is what a review of an outsourced team looks at.
Why this is hard to judge yourself
An outsourced team controls the information you see. Progress looks like activity, invoices look like value, and a confident status update can hide a brittle codebase or a dependency on one person. Without a senior, independent eye, you find out the truth only when something breaks or when a new supplier inherits the mess.
What the review checks
The code and how it is built. Is it maintainable, documented and tested, or held together in ways that will cost you later? Could another team pick it up, or are you locked in?
What you actually own. Do you have the code, the accounts, the infrastructure and the intellectual property, or does the supplier hold the keys? This is where outsourcing arrangements most often trap clients.
Security and data. Whether your customers’ data is handled properly, and whether basic controls and Cyber Essentials-level hygiene are in place.
Delivery reality. Whether the pace and quality you are paying for match what is actually shipping, and whether estimates are honest.
Key-person and continuity risk. Whether the whole thing depends on one or two individuals, and what happens if they or the supplier disappear.
What good looks like
A healthy arrangement leaves you owning your code, accounts and IP, with a codebase another team could take over, sensible security, and delivery that matches the invoices. The review tells you how far from that you are, and gives you a ranked list of what to fix and what to renegotiate.
Managing from knowledge
Many outsourced teams do good work. The review gives you, the non-technical client, an independent picture, so you can manage the relationship from knowledge rather than trust alone.
Where ScaleAround fits
Our technology review gives you an independent, senior assessment of your outsourced build, in plain English, with the risks and the fixes ranked and costed. Where you need ongoing oversight, our fractional leadership can hold the supplier to account for you.
Our founder, Oliver Smith, has more than 20 years leading technology and quality, including managing teams and suppliers across multiple continents. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society. Our engagements are led by senior practitioners with at least 15 years of relevant experience.
Frequently asked questions
How do I review an outsourced development team? An independent senior assessment of the code, what you own, security, delivery reality and key-person risk, so you know whether you are getting what you pay for.
I am not technical. Can I still get value from this? Yes, that is exactly who it is for. The review translates the technical picture into decisions you can act on.
What is the most common problem it finds? Clients who do not fully own their code, accounts or IP, and codebases that would be hard for another team to take over.
Does a review mean we should switch supplier? Not necessarily. It gives you the facts to decide whether to fix, renegotiate or move, from knowledge rather than guesswork.
How long does it take? Usually one to three weeks depending on the size of the codebase and how much access the supplier provides.
