Scaling is not one thing. A review looks at where it will actually bite:
The data layer. Databases are the most common ceiling. A design that is fine at today’s volume can fall over when the tables, queries or connections multiply.
The architecture. Whether the system can grow by adding capacity, or whether parts of it have to be rebuilt to cope. The difference is months of work and a lot of money.
The expensive paths. The handful of operations that dominate load, and whether they were built to handle a spike or just to work in a demo.
The delivery machine. Whether the team can ship changes safely and often enough to keep up, because a platform that cannot be changed quickly cannot be scaled quickly.
The cost curve. Whether your infrastructure cost grows in line with usage or races ahead of it, which decides whether growth is profitable.
Why guessing is dangerous
Systems rarely degrade gently. They cope, then they do not, often at the worst moment, when volume is climbing and attention is elsewhere. And the fixes that would have been cheap and calm a quarter earlier become expensive and frantic under load. Knowing the ceiling in advance turns a crisis into a costed plan.
